Kien Giang announces World Biosphere Reserve

October 27, 2006. This is the second largest world biosphere reserve in the Mekong Delta.

Located on over 1.14 million hectares, the biosphere covers three parts, the Phu Quoc National Park, the U Minh Thuong National Park and the Kien Luong-Kien Hai coastal forest. Each has its own characteristics, but all of them are home to the fauna and flora of coastal wetland areas.

U Minh Thuong National Park plays an important role in conserving the ecosystem of mangrove forests and the Mekong Delta. The park preserves Iutra sumatrana, listed in the Vietnamese and World Red Books.

Phu Quoc National Park has plant species migrating from three regions, Malaysia-Indonesia, Hymalaya-Yunnan (China) and India-Myanmar. Phu Quoc has 529 plant species of 120 families, in which 42 species have been listed in the Vietnamese and World Red Books. The buffer and development zones also have a diverse sea ecosystem. In this 10,000 ha area, nine species of seaweed grow, providing a food resource that ensures the existence of dugon.

Corral reefs of 260 different species and covering more than 470 ha form the north to south of Phu Quoc island, including more than 360 ha in the southern area of An Thoi archipelago. The corral reef areas are home to more than 150 species of ornamental fish, including many valuable species, 48 species of mollusk, 25 species of echinoderm and more than 50 species of seaweed.

Mollusks in the Kien Luong-Kien Hai coastal protective forest form an important part of the local fauna. Four of the 17 endemic animal species in Bai Voi , Kien Luong have been included in the Vietnamese and World Red Books, including vooc bac (trachypithelus germaini), rai ca cui (amblonyx cinera), soc do (callosciurus finlaysoni ssp), doi (rhinolopus marshalli, and khi duoi dai (macaca fascicularis).

The region has more than 300 species of animal and 61 species of bird, including those listed in the Vietnamese and World Red Books such as seu dau do (grus antigone) and sa mo rong (pelargopsis capensis).

Many research and preservation projects in this biosphere reserve have been implemented.

Vietnam now has five world biosphere reserves - Can Gio in Ho Chi Minh City, Cat Tien (Dong Nai, Lam Dong and Binh Phuoc provinces), Cat Ba (Hai Phong), the Red River Delta and Kien Giang.
