More funds for biosphere reserve project

The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) will fund 5 million euros (US$6.78 million) for the second phase of a conservation project in Kien Giang Province from 2011-15.
The project aims to conserve and develop key sites of a biosphere reserve in the southwestern province of Kien Giang.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday by the People's Committee of Kien Giang, AusAID and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the project's executing agency.
The project's second phase will focus on conserving protective forests, particularly mangrove trees, in three key areas of the biosphere reserve, including U Minh Thuong National Park, Phu Quoc National Park and Kien Luong and Hon Chong coastal protective forests. The forests protect the areas when flooding and natural disasters strike.
It will also help maintain and improve biodiversity as well as raise environmental awareness among residents in Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta provinces.
AusAID provided 2.75 million AUD for the first three-year phase of the project, which will end in December.
The first phase included establishment of a land-use management model for three key areas, development of a technical natural resources management plan, and guidelines on how to maintain and improve biodiversity, and development of technical guidelines on water management for U Minh Thuong National Park and forest fire prevention for U Minh Thuong and Phu Quoc National Parks.
It also included environmental awareness campaigns and technical training on income-generation activities and value-chain improvement in key areas.
