Five years have passed since the day Vietnam put forward the plan on building and developing Phu Quoc Island into a large global tourism and trade exchange centre. But it seems that nothing considerable has been accomplished yet.

 Only four projects operational

 To date, the island development programming remains controversial. A lot of projects have been registered, but investors have made no moves. Many big infrastructure items on the island are unfinished. The Duong To International airport project, which kicked off construction in 2008, still has not finished main items, including a resettlement area.

Phu Quoc Island: A “waning heaven”

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island. Situated in the Gulf of Thailand, the island is part of Kien Giang province. The district of Phu Quoc includes the island proper and 21 smaller islets. Phu Quoc is called a “Tourist Heaven”.

Under the government’s scheme, by 2020 Phu Quoc will be a sea ecological tourism centre, attracting 2-3 million visitors a year.

However, this “heaven” is losing its value through the exploitation and disfigurement of its natural assets.

In the name of tourism projects, many businesses have been destroying the natural landscapes of Phu Quoc. They are exploiting sand on the coast, causing coastal erosion, and menacing the scenery with concrete works.

Phu Quoc selected as Vietnam’s top tourist destination

Phu Quoc is defned as the country’s key tourist site and, through this decision, tourism projects located on the island will enjoy investment incentives.

The island’s sea border-gate is An Thoi Port and its air border-gate is Phu Quoc Airport. Via these two borders, direct air and sea routes will be established between Phu Quoc and neighbouring countries.

EVN plans new power plant projects

National power utility Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) has said it would generate an additional 2,000 MW from 15 new hydropower and thermal projects nationwide this year.

These projects include Ban Ve, Srepok 3, Dong Nai, An Khe – Kanak, the first turbine group of the Son La hydropower plant, and the second turbine groups of the Quang Ninh and Hai Phong thermal power plants.

EVN will also complete the transmission grid for Ha Noi, a 500-KV transformer station for Pleiku and speed up other transmission projects in the Central Highlands and southern regions to ensure stable power supplies after 2012.
