Phu Quoc set to become tourism and commercial hub

According to a decision recently signed by the Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung, Vietnamese individuals and organisations, Overseas Vietnamese and foreign investors are encouraged to invest in the island. The investment fields will range from infrastructure, industry, urban development and seaports to trade, tourism, finance and banking. Foreign investors will be allowed to provide international telecom services on the island. The decision is expected to boost the development of Phu Quoc in the near future. With over 56,000 sq. km in area, Phu Quoc is known as having great potential for seafood production and tourism. VOVNews

Vietnam Airlines will launch five weekly services on the HCMC-Can Tho-Phu Quoc

Vietnam Airlines will launch five weekly services on the HCMC-Can Tho-Phu Quoc route from March 28 as part of the flagship carrier’s to expand domestic services in summer.
The airline’s planning and market department told the Daily on Monday that the 65-seat ART72 plane would fly on the short-haul route on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.
The ATR72 will take off at Tan Son Nhat Airport at 9:45 a.m. and from Phu Quoc Island at 12:35 p.m. of the days.
Asked about the plan to transport more passengers to Danang during an upcoming international firework competition later this month, the department said a detailed plan for flight frequency increase had not been available.
Vietnam’s low-cost carrier Jetstar Pacific told the Daily on Monday that it would not add any flight to the daily schedule for Danang during the event. The airline now operates five daily flights from Hanoi and HCMC to the central coastal city and vice versa.

Phu Quoc forest fire flares up again

A forest fire that broke out Monday in the Mekong Delta Province of Kien Giang’s Phu Quoc District began burning out of control again Wednesday after having previously been stamped out.

The inferno flared up again at around 9 am in Bai Vong Village of Ham Ninh Commune.
The district mobilized over 500 people to fight the blaze and the flames were brought under control in just over an hour.
When the fire first ignited on Monday, it took over five hours to put out the blaze, leaving more than 40 hectares of forest destroyed. There are no estimates yet as to how much damage the new fire has caused.
In related news, a 44-year-old man died March 9 of severe burns after attempting to stamp out a forest fire in Than Uyen District in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau.
Vu A Lai died after he and several other residents tried to fight the blaze, which broke out in Noong Quang Village, Khoen On District at around noon on March 8.
